Why is sun protection still important in winter?

It is extremely important to protect your skin from all year round, no matter the weather or the temperature, as the sun can cause year-round damage that leads to premature wrinkles and other signs of aging, including sun spots, darks spots and fine lines. While UV rays do not feel as warm during the winter as they typically do during the summer, you are still at risk for a burn, even when the sun isn’t out.

What are the main issues that skin faces as the temperature drops?

As the weather cools down, the skin faces an array of new issues, like dehydration, dryness and chapped irritated skin. On the other hand, when too much of the skin’s natural oils have been sloughed away, glands overcompensate and secrete excess oil, which can lead to oily skin. For those who are active in winter sports, ski or snowboard, they face the risk of wind burn, sun burn and other skin irritations that can be used by over exposure to the elements.

How can proper sun care alleviate these problems?

Proper suncare is a great solution for alleviating dry, dehydrated and irritated skin, especially when using an SPF that is filled with nourishing and moisturizing ingredients that not only protect skin from winter elements but also offer anti-aging and anti-inflammatory benefits that result in a soothed, radiant and healthy skin.

What ingredients should we be looking for?

Consumers need the same amount of protection and healthy ingredients during the winter as they do year-round! While the sun may not be as strong during winter months, it is still important to look at the best and healthiest ingredients when it comes to daily sun protection. Look for natural and certified organic ingredients that are not only strongly effective but also delicate enough to soothe, moisturize and nourish all skin types. It’s also important to take note of the active ingredient percentage in your SPF. Because we use natural SPF protectants like Strawberry and Red Raspberry Seed Oil extracts, Plankton, and Red Algae, we’re able to lower the percentage of active ingredients we include in our SPF.

Do certain areas require more attention?

It is extremely important to protect your face, hands, neck and décolletage from the sun since they are being constantly exposed to the sun. The area around the eyes is especially sensitive to UV exposure so wear sunglasses with UV protective lenses, and shade your face with a hat or umbrella.  Also, your lips are equally as sensitive to UV exposure. so wear SPF lip balm to not only protect them but also keep them hydrated.

Any other quick tips and tricks women can incorporate into their routines?

It isn’t enough to just use a foundation or tinted moisturizer with SPF daily. It’s certainly a great start but doesn’t provide the adequate coverage to protect you from the sun. Pairing your makeup with a lightweight face specific sunscreen, and reapply accordingly throughout the day, is still your best defense.
